Add the Massapequa girls' field hockey to the list of champions from Massapequa High School.
Last weekend, the team captured the Class A Long Island title as they defeated Smithtown, 3-2 in an exciting match played at Hofstra University.
With the game tied 2-2 going into a 7-on-7 sudden-death overtime, goalie Danielle Scicutella made two key saves, setting up a game-winning goal by Samantha Wong.
With the win, the Lady Chiefs advanced to the state semifinals, where they will play Section I champion Lakeland at 1:30 p.m. this Friday in a game at Alliance Bank Stadium in Syracuse.
The sparkling play on both sides of the ball proved to be a fitting ending for a game in which the Lady Chiefs battled from behind on two occasions to take the overtime match.
Smithtown scored first, when Amanda Danzinger scored a goal with 6:18 left in the first half. Only a minute later, Alexandria Hein tied the game for Massapequa.
However, Smithtown got on the board again in the second half on a goal by Dianna Rubino. Eight minutes later, with 3:21 left in the game, Megan McGuire tied the score with an assist from Ms. Hein.
That set the stage for the overtime heroics of Ms. Scicutella. And for Alexandria Hein who not only had the assist for the game-tying goal, but also the game-winning goal by Ms. Wong.
