The following is a summary of actions taken by the Massapequa Board of Education at its regularly scheduled meeting on October 19.

The Board of Education received the following reports:

• Student leaders Carolyn Miller and Liz Anderson recognized members of the board of education and their diligent work during School Board Recognition Week.

• Assistant Superintendent Mrs. Iconis presented an overview of new spelling programs in the primary grades.

• Mr. Bishko, director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics, presented an overview of the "Physical Best" program and other districtwide initiatives surrounding the physical education program.

• Curriculum Associate for Mathematics Toni Anne Summers provided an overview of the sixth-grade math program.

The board of education acted on a variety of new business, including:

• Authorized the Superintendent of Schools or designee to approve certain appropriation adjustments.

• Authorized participation in the Shared Municipal Services Incentive Grant Program with the Nassau County Police Academy as the co-applicant.

• Declared October 2006 "Act for Education" Month.
