Three Massapequa residents have played starring roles for Muhlenberg College athletic teams.
Sophomore Laura Lipari of the Muhlenberg College women's cross-country team ran the best race of her career at the DeSales Invitational.
Lipari navigated the 6-kilometer course in 25:26.17 to finish 15th out of 214 runners. She was the second Mule runner to cross the finish line, helping the team place third out of 24 teams - its best showing ever at DeSales.
The meet was Muhlenberg's final tuneup for the Centennial Conference Championships, which will be held on Saturday, Oct. 28, at Dickinson.
Freshman Tara Mannino competed in the race and placed 123rd (eighth among Muhlenberg runners) with a time of 28:55.44.
Junior Jillian Duffy of the Muhlenberg College field hockey team scored a goal and an assist in an important 3-1 win against Gettysburg.
The Bullets were ranked in the top 20 in Division III as recently as two weeks ago, and all four of their previous losses were to teams that have been nationally ranked this season.
Duffy was a factor in the Mules' first two goals. With about 15 minutes left in the first half, her cross through the middle set up a teammate for a wide-open shot. Early in the second half, Duffy dribbled all the way into the circle and shot the ball past the goalie to give Muhlenberg a 2-0 lead.
The three points gave Duffy 21 for the season on nine goals and three assists. She is tied for the team lead in goals and game-winning goals (three).
The Mules have a record of 8-5 with four games remaining in the regular season.
