The following is a summary of actions taken by the Massapequa Board of Education at its regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday, Sept. 21. The Board of Education received the following reports:

• The Superintendent's Report which included notification of an Emergency Preparedness Meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 10, 7:30 p.m. at Berner Middle School, and American Sign Language teachers Melanie Smith and Patricia McCarthy selected as 2006 Dowling College/News12 Long Island Educators of the Month.

• Special Education Program - Mrs. Cathy Pantelides, Director of Special Education, provided a comprehensive overview and update of initiatives within Special Education programs.

The Board of Education acted on a variety of new business, including:

• Approval of updates to Bylaws Chapter XI effective July 1, 2006.

• Acceptance of revised Board of Education procedures.

• Authorization of three vehicles to be declared surplus and sold to the highest bidder.

• Awarded a bid for bathroom renovations at Birch Lane School.
