St. David's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Massapequa Park will be offering American Sign Language classes this fall in the church's Fellowship Hall, 20 Clark Boulevard.
Beginner adult classes: Wednesday, Sept. 27 to Nov. 15 - eight weeks, 7 to 8:30 p.m. Beginner children classes: Saturday, Oct. 14 to Nov. 18 - five weeks, 9 to 10 a.m.
St. David's established a deaf ministry more than 15 years ago and began tackling the challenge of supporting a sign-language program during their Sunday 9:30 worship. In addition to the interpreted service, the church also provides social events geared to the deaf. As many as 125 men, women and children have gathered to socialize.
The members of St. David's deaf ministry offer an on-going invitation to all, no matter what their abilities. Janis Garone, the ASL program director, said that the American Sign Language classes are open to the public but you have to call the church at 799-7832 to make final arrangements.
