Massapequa High School's Family & Consumer Science Department, in conjunction with its "Child Study" course, has completed another successful Nursery School Program for children of district residents.

In an emotional graduation ceremony, Teacher Barbara Devoti, a fixture at Massapequa High School for almost 30 years, and the pre-school director, reminded audience members of her plans to retire.

Ms. Devoti also recalled the fond memories of the many students, and children of former students, that she has had the opportunity to work with over the years. "I thank you for entrusting me with your most precious gifts - your children," she told the audience.

The International Center for Leadership in Education accepted the high school Child Study Program and nursery school as part of its "Successful Practices Network," and is listed on the worldwide web as a reference for other educational institutions on a national and international level.

High School students enrolled in the program must successfully complete the Parenting and Child Development Course to prepare for a hands-on approach to learning that the Nursery School Program prides itself on.

"I set high standards for the quality of work I expect from the students in the Child Study Program," Ms. Devoti added. "It is very important that they put in the time to become adequately prepared to fulfill their duties in the Nursery School Program."

They are also expected to plan and prepare activities for those children enrolled in the nursery school, which begins the first week of March, and continues until graduation in June. At this year's ceremony, new principal of Massapequa High School, Dr. James Grossane, did the honors by handing out diplomas to the little graduates, and vowed to see them at their next graduation in 2018.
