Massapequa High School athletic squads continue to make history. First, it was the Massapequa High School girls' varsity basketball team, which recently enjoyed another championship season. Now, it's the boys' turn. The Massapequa varsity baseball squad is also in the middle of an incredible season.
After winning the Long Island Class AA baseball championship, the Chiefs now sport an amazing 27-0 record. This Saturday, Binghamton, they begin play in the single-elimination state semifinals.
Last Sunday, in a thriller played at Firemen's Field in Valley Stream, the Chiefs advanced to Binghamton by winning one of the most exciting Long Island finals in recent memories.
Thanks to an eighth-inning walk-off home run by Dan Nagorski, they topped East Islip, 6-5.
The Chiefs won by scoring six runs in the final three innings. How they scored those runs was pretty dramatic, also.
In the seventh inning, with East Islip leading 5-3, Massapequa was down to its final out. Pinch hitter Chris Iovino then beat out an infield single.
The "safe" call was vigorously disputed by East Islip head coach, Sal Ciampi. Massapequa head coach, Tom Sheedy called on another pinch hitter, Jason Buono, who promptly hit a two-run homer to tie the game.
That set the stage for Nagorski's extra inning, championship-winning home run.
With runs in the second, third, and fifth innings, East Islip built up a 4-0 lead.
However, Massapequa, after being shut out on no-hit pitching by Pete Bregartner, rallied to score three runs in the sixth, all on the strength of a three-run homer by Matt Prokopowicz.
East Islip scored another run in the seventh, setting the stage for Buono's heroics in the bottom of the frame and Nagorski's home run in the eighth.
