The rain held out over Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa district for a Memorial Day tribute to veterans.

Under cloudy skies, Fairfield students, staff and parents gathered in front of the building where distinguished guests included Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto, Oyster Bay Town Clerk Steve Labriola, Assemblymen Peter Schmitt and Joseph Saladino, and Board of Education Vice President Christine Lupetin-Perrino.

Fairfield students were decked out in red, white and blue, and the school band provided musical accompaniment to patriotic songs that punctuated the ceremony.

Students Michael Nudge, Jackie Bernhart, Heather Sweeney, Samantha Mussorfiti and Caroline Phillips stepped up to the podium to share readings about the patriotic history of the United States while veterans and guests looked and listened intently.

"It is important for students to understand the true meaning and significance of this important holiday," stated Fairfield Principal Jason Esposito. "I am grateful to all the staff and parents who worked together to plan this event."
