After spending several months researching their topics and working with their classmates and teachers, an impressive number of students from Berner Middle School, Ames Campus, and Massapequa High School qualified to compete in the highly competitive New York State National History Day Competition held on May 5 in Cooperstown, NY.
Approximately 275 students from across all of New York State competed in the academic challenge of National History Day, which provides students with the opportunity to research a topic in history in depth.
Although the competition was tough, Massapequa's students were well prepared and up to the challenge, and two of the eight students who represented the district placed in the prestigious competition.
In the Individual Performance category, Massapequa High School eleventh-grader Fayrisa Greenwald won Third Place with her entry "Dorothea Dix: Fighting for the Mentally Ill." In the Individual Documentary category, Ames Campus ninth-grader Charlotte Burger won First Place with her entry "The Whole World Was Watching." Charlotte will be competing in the national competition at the University of Maryland, June 11-15.
National History Day has proven to be a tremendous success for the students of the Massapequa School District.
"We cannot be prouder of our students, teachers, and parents for their continued dedication to the National History Day program," stated Massapequa's National History Day Coordinator Dana Robbins.
