The fate of a Massapequa youth has ended in tragedy.

After staying on life-support system for two days following a shooting incident at his residence, Tyler Dunne, 10, of Commonwealth Avenue, died on Tuesday morning.

Dunne was pronounced dead by Dr. Peter Ciminera of the Nassau University Medical Center on May 2 at 11:51 a.m.

On early Sunday evening, April 30, detectives from the 6th Precinct responded to a serious aided case at a residence on Commonwealth Avenue, where a 10-year-old boy had gained access to a .38 caliber handgun belonging to his father, a New York City police officer. The incident took place at approximately 6:15 p.m.

According to detectives, the weapon had discharged, causing the victim to sustain a gunshot wound to his head.

The child was then transported via Nassau County Police Detective ambulance to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, where he remained on life-support until his death on Tuesday morning.

According to published reports, police have ruled the shooting death an accident. In addition, the victim's father will not be charged in connection with the shooting. An investigation by the New York City Police Department's Internal Affairs division is still ongoing.

The deceased was a fifth-grader at Lockhart Elementary School.

Following Tyler's death, the Dunne family released a statement through the medical center, which read:

"Tyler Dunne has passed into a better place and this wonderful little boy is giving life to others through the gift of organ donations. The Dunne family wishes to thank their families, friends, and well-wishers for their prayers and help."
