The Massapequa Board of Education unanimously adopted the 2006/2007 school budget at its meeting on April 6.

The district was awarded an additional $1.6 million in state aid, resulting in a tax levy increase of 5.7 percent and an overall district spending increase of 6.34 percent.

According to BOE officials, the adopted budget maintains all educational supports and programs, while enhancing the district's gifted and talented programs, and providing for additional support in Special Education Programs.

Two seats on the Board of Education are currently open. Incumbents Thomas Caltabiano and Maryanne Fisher will be running, in addition to a challenger, Gary Bennett.

The district would like to remind residents to vote on Tuesday, May 16.
