On Saturday morning, April 29, a special event will take place on the roads of Massapequa - the inaugural Crohn's and Colitis Foundation "Guts and Glory" 5 Kilometer Run. The run is sponsored by the Greater Long Island Running Club.
The run will start and finish at Marjorie Post Park at 9:30 on the morning of April 29. Every penny raised that morning will go to the Foundation and its efforts to cure and prevent Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis, and to improve the quality of life of those unfortunate people who are afflicted by these diseases.
Organizers expect that the run will attract more than 200 runners. They need the community's support to assure the safety of these guests in the Massapequa community.
Organizers also said that it will be necessary to close Unqua Road for the short time that the runners are passing through. The first 2.5 miles of the course are on Unqua Road and adjacent streets such as Conde, Avenue Louis, Jones Court and Burton Lane, and the Grover Avenue/Chester Avenue/Short Lane circle before turning back onto Unqua, Jones Court, Avenue Louise to the end and then back into the park for the last 6/10 of a mile. The last participant will re-enter the park no later than 10:05 a.m. and the course will be re-opened to vehicular traffic immediately thereafter.
Organizers hope that local residents will be on hand to cheer the participants along their way. There will be lots of folks doing a 5 kilometer run for the first time, and they will need all the help and encouragement they can get. This is a great opportunity to show athletes from all over Long Island what a friendly community Massapequa is.
