The Massapequa High School girls' basketball team is going to the Nassau County finals.

This Saturday night, the Lady Chiefs will play Elmont for the Nassau County Class AA title. The game will take place at 6:15 p.m. at Hofstra University.

Massapequa advanced to the finals with two convincing wins this past week.

The Lady Chiefs postseason got off to a strong start with a victory over Calhoun, 69-49. Massapequa took an early 30-10 first quarter lead and never relinquished the advantage, even though Calhoun did outscore the Lady Chiefs in both the second and third quarters.

The always-well balanced Massapequa scoring attack saw four players in double figures. Ashley Caiafa had 18 points and 14 rebounds, while Janine Aldridge scored 11 of her 16 points in the final quarter, when Massapequa began to pull away from the opposition.

Also in double figures were Suzi Fregosi (14 points) and Kim Giaquinto (13 points).

Then, on Tuesday night, Massapequa defeated Uniondale by an equally convincing 86-66 score. Again, the Lady Chiefs offensive attack received help from all corners. All five starters scored in double figures. Ashley Caiafa improved on her performance against Calhoun, leading the way with 25 points.

She was followed in the scoring parade by Suzi Fregosi (18 points), Kim Giaquinto (15 points), Janine Aldridge (14 points), and Gina Giambanco who also had 14 points. In addition, Ms. Caiafa had 11 rebounds, while Ms. Fregosi recorded 12 assists and seven steals.

Massapequa ended the regular season on a hot streak, defeating their opponents by lopsided, double-digit totals. And so far, the playoffs have seen no slowdown in the Lady Chiefs' high-powered attack. The championship game will be between the number one ranked team in the county (Elmont) and Massapequa, which went into the playoffs ranked number two.

The Massapequa boys team also ended the regular season on a winning note. However, their season ended with a first round loss to Freeport. On Wednesday, Feb. 22, the Chiefs fell 45-39 in a game where it took Massapequa's offense a while to get untracked. The Chiefs scored only eight points in the first quarter and just five in the second quarter as they went into halftime trailing, 23-13.

The Chiefs rallied in the second half, outscoring Freeport 13-9 in the final frame. But it wasn't enough. In a losing cause, Anthony Errico performed heroically for the Chiefs. He was nearly the entire offense for Massapequa, scoring 21 of the Chiefs 39 total points. That output included three three-pointers. In fact, the Chiefs had a seven three-pointers in the game, including two by Alex Arnold and one each by Stephen Bentz and Evan Witt.

Although the season ended in disappointment, the Chiefs sported a brilliant 11-1 record in regular season Conference AA-II play, giving them a solid foundation for the 2006-2007 season.
