Both the Massapequa High School boys and girls varsity basketball teams continued their winning ways last week with easy victories over local rivals.
Both teams are honing their skills in anticipation of the county playoff season, which begins later this month. The boys' squad will play at home on Wednesday, Feb. 22 in a game that begins at 7 p.m. The girls' team, meanwhile, will open the playoff season with another home game, this one on Friday, Feb. 24, also at 7 p.m.
In regular season action, the Lady Chiefs kept their high scoring offense in tune with a 75-40 shellacking of Mepham. Suzi Fregosi came within three steals of a triple double as she paced Massapequa with 19 points, 10 assists, and seven steals (10 steals would have been an amazing game). Ms. Fregosi also added a three-point goal to her offense attack.
Ms. Fregosi was joined in scoring double figures by Gina Giambanco, who scored 16 points, along with seven steals and seven assists. The Lady Chiefs currently sport a 11-0 record in Conference I play.
Meanwhile, the boys' varsity emulated the girls' squad with a lopsided victory of their own, as they defeated Herricks, 82-42. Stephen Bentz and Matt Terrono each scored 16 points for the Chiefs who now boast a 11-1 Conference I record. In late January, the Chiefs defeated Herricks, but that time by a 56-51 score.
