Basketball season is here and now the Massapequa athletic teams are showing their prowess on the hardwood courts as well.
Both the boys and girls varsity squads are off to fast starts as they vie for their respective conference titles.
In recent action, the boys' squad defeated Oceanside in a 48-45 thriller. Anthony Errico paced Massapequa with 21 points, including six free throws in the final quarter. Fellow senior Keith Tyas had eight points, two of them coming via the three-pointer.
On Friday, Jan. 13, Massapequa's winning ways continued with a 58-43 victory over visiting Long Beach. Once again, Keith Tyas and Anthony Errico paced the Chiefs. Errico had 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Tyas had a career-high 19 points, including five three-pointers.
Meanwhile, the girls' squad started the new year in impressive fashion, defeating Hempstead and St. Francis Prep by comfortable margins.
On Jan. 10, the Lady Chiefs traveled to Hempstead, where they had no problem in taking a 57-30 win. Suzi Fregosi, Janine Aldridge, and Kim Giaquinto all scored in double digits for Massapequa.
On Jan. 2, the year after New Year's Day, St. Francis Prep traveled to Massapequa, only to lose a similarly lopsided 76-42 margin. Gina Giambanco led the way with 26 points. She was assisted by Suzi Fregosi, who chipped in 18 points.
