It was another championship weekend for Massapequa High School athletic squads.
First, the boys' football team advanced to their second straight Nassau Conference I final by defeating Uniondale in a come-from-behind thriller, 7-6.
The Chiefs will play Baldwin on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. at the Hofstra University football field.
In the victory over Uniondale, the Chiefs had a hard time generating much offense. Down 6-0 in the third quarter, Massapequa mounted what turned out to be their game-winning drive. The Chiefs found themselves with a third-and-goal on Uniondale's two-yard line.
There, the Chiefs won the game with a daring play. Quarterback Steven Bentz pitched the ball to tailback Chris Hurst. Instead of running towards paydirt, Hurst stopped and flipped a touchdown pass to Bentz, who was standing all along in the end zone.
It was the third time that Hurst had completed such a pass. As the score indicated, the game was a defensive struggle. Seniors Matt Crowley and Michael Perez, who each had nine tackles, led the Chiefs defense. Uniondale's top running threat, Conte Cuttino, rushed for 155 yards, but the Chiefs kept him out of the end zone. For the entire second half, Uniondale failed to score as Massapequa completed their dramatic go-ahead drive.
In addition, the girls' volleyball won their sixth consecutive Nassau County Class AA title with a convincing 25-23, 25-14, 25-21 win over Baldwin.
The win allowed the Lady Chiefs to advance to the Long Island championship game against Ward Melville, where the season ended in disappointment, as Ward Melville won all three games.
In the game against Baldwin, Massapequa was led by the heroics of senior stars Alicia Scotto-Lavino and Bonnie Weinstein. Even though the Lady Chiefs did not win the island title, the seniors had the immense satisfaction of ending their careers with four Nassau County titles in tow.
On the soccer field, the Chiefs advanced to the title game against Herricks, only to lose a 1-0 heartbreaker. The Chiefs were hampered by the loss of Dan Kelly, the squad's top defender, who was red-carded in the semifinal win over Carey and thus ineligible for the county title game.
The title game was a thriller. Both teams went into overtime tied, 0-0. Herricks prevailed when Dan Duras scored the golden goal early in the overtime frame. The Chiefs best opportunity to score came late in the last regulation quarter when a kick by John Modena hit the crossbar. Similarly, a kick in the overtime frame by Ryan Vulin had a shot a going in, but veered right.
Nonetheless, Massapequa finished the season with a sterling 14-4-2 record as the school's tradition of excellence on the soccer field continues.
