It was a good weekend for Massapequa High School sports. Both the boys soccer and football squads won tight games to advance to the next rounds in their quest for Nassau County championships.
The top-seeded soccer team won an exciting 1-0 win over number four-seeded Carey. Once again, Greg Lorenz was the offensive star of the game, scoring a goal with 15 minutes left in regulation time to clinch the victory. In the quarterfinal game against Freeport, Lorenz had also scored the lone goal in a 1-0 triumph.
Alex Sylvan was the defensive star for Massapequa. He recorded his 10th shutout of the season, while making three saves in goal for the Chiefs.
Winning is nothing new for Massapequa. The boys squad has won three straight Nassau County titles. With the win over Carey, they advanced to the title game against Herricks.
The varsity football squad, ranked number three in conference play, passed their first test of the postseason, defeating Freeport 22-14 to advance to a semifinal game against Uniondale this Saturday.
In the victory over Uniondale, the Chiefs jumped out to a 13-0 first quarter lead, one they never relinquished. Freeport battled back in the second half, scoring a third quarter touchdown and a two-point conversion, one that cut the lead to 22-14. In the final quarter, Freeport was driving towards a potential game-tying touchdown, until an interception by the Chiefs' Kevin Zorovich stopped the drive and clinched the win for Massapequa.
Stephen Bentz was the offensive star for the Chiefs, passing for three touchdowns and 177 total yards. Both Michael Perez and Matt Cowley were on the receiving ends of touchdown tosses from Bentz.
The Chiefs next opponent is number-two ranked Uniondale, a team that defeated Massapequa 28-13 in the regular season finale played on Oct. 30.
The showdown between Massapequa and Uniondale will take place Saturday, Nov. 12 at 8:30 p.m. at Hofstra's Stuart Stadium.
