The Massapequa Coast Juniors' team won the New York State Championship on Sunday, July 31. They advanced to the Eastern Regional Tournament, which began on Friday, August 5 in Freehold, NJ. The Coast Juniors won two straight games in that tournament before eventually finishing in 4th place in the region.
The boys were undefeated in district, section and state tournament play, outscoring their opponents 107-27. Pitching has been outstanding for Coast as they recorded one perfect game, a two-hitter, a 10 strike out game and three shutouts throughout the tournaments.
Coast hitting was strong with the boys recording 8 home runs (including three grand slams). During the Regional Tournament one home run was a bomb that landed 345 feet away! During the Sectional Tournament, the boys showed their determination when they came from behind for victories over Franklin Square (4-3) and Long Beach (16-12).
Moving on to the New York State Tournament in Haverstraw, NY, they defeated Fairport, NY (11-1) in the first game. A very tough Lewisboro, NY team was leading 2-0 after 6 innings, when the "Come Back Kids" did it again---winning the game in extra innings 4-2. Their final victory for the State Title was a big win over Fairport 14-5. All their hard work and dedication has paid off.
They advanced to the Eastern Regional Tournament, which, as noted, was held in Freehold.
There, they defeated state champion teams from Delaware and Massachusetts before falling to New Jersey in the Semi-Finals. The boys finished in 4th place at the Eastern Region with a 2-2 record and could be ranked as one of the top 20 Junior teams in the United States.
