The Plainedge Board of Education recently approved a revote of the school budget to be held June 20. The proposal before the voters on that day will be the same comprehensive budget that was presented to the community in May.
Voting will take place at Plainedge High School from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. A public budget hearing is scheduled for June 13 at 7 p.m. in the Central Office conference room. This is an informational hearing; no action will be taken.
According to New York State law, if the school budget fails to receive approval on the revote, the district will be required to go on a contingency budget, reducing expenditures by $2.4 million and bringing the elimination of interscholastic sports, music programs, field trips, off-site competitions, clubs, and other services provided to children.
Residents are reminded that they may register to vote on any school day until June 17, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Administration Office. Residents are only required to re-register if they are not currently registered with the district or the Nassau County Board of Elections.
Evening registration will also take place prior to all elementary spring concerts, beginning at 7 p.m. The registration schedule is from 7 to 8 p.m. on the following dates: June 7 (at the Middle and High School); June 8 (High School); June 13 (Middle and High School); June 14 (Middle School); and June 15 (Middle School).
Absentee ballots will also be available for the June 20 revote. Absentee ballot applications must be received by the district clerk seven days before the budget revote if the ballot is to be mailed to the voter. If the ballot is to be issued in person, the application can be delivered to the clerk on the day of the vote; but voters are reminded that the ballot must be returned by 5 p.m. that day. For further information, please call the district clerk at 992-7451.
