The LI Soccer League is mourning the loss of John Varas Sr., who passed away March 29, 2005 at the age of 69 after a lengthy and valiant battle against cancer. "John was one of Massapequa's best. He was one of our best coaches, trained all our referees and was a terrific administrator," commented longtime Massapequa Soccer Club volunteer Maryann Kozak. "He was a real stand-up guy. You knew where you stood with John Varas."

Although the longtime Massapequa Park resident was an avid bowler, he absolutely loved soccer and was an early and passionate advocate in the development of women's soccer back in the 1970s. John played soccer as a young man but quickly realized that he could give back to the game as a coach. He coached both genders and various levels.

From the touchlines, he understood that the officiating needed to become better so he became a referee. Rapidly rising through the ranks, he officiated professional games. He traveled across the US as a National Referee and National Assessor. He was mentor to hundreds of players, coaches and referees. Like E.F. Hutton, when John Varas talked, people listened.

John was a lieutenant in the NY Police Dept. and retired in 1989 after 29 years. A few years ago, he moved to Ormond Beach, FL. All of John's children became accomplished soccer players. Our thoughts and prayers are with John Jr., Margie and Jean as well and especially his wife, Mary. Thanks so much, John, for a lifetime of service to the children of Long Island. We will miss you!
