Massapequa Federation of Teachers Holds Annual Awards Ceremony
On June 8, the Massapequa Federation of Teachers, a union representing over 650 teachers and secretaries, sponsored its annual Awards Ceremony. The ceremony was held in the Berner Middle School student cafeteria on Carman Mill Road in Massapequa.

Republican Delegation Calls for the Immediate Hiring of New Police Officers
The members of the Legislature's Republican Minority recently called upon the county executive to hire 400 new police officers and 50 new detectives. "While most police departments around the country are increasing personnel numbers to combat issues such as gang violence and the threat of terrorism, the county executive continues to tout that Nassau's police forces are at an all time low," said Minority Leader Peter J. Schmitt (R-Massapequa). Since the county executive took office in 2002, nearly 400 officers have retired from duty. In an effort to curb the loss of personnel within the department, the Republican Minority presented an amendment during last year's budget process that would have added 300 new officers and 30 new detectives. The minority was not able to convince any in the Democrat Majority to cross party lines and vote for the amendment.
