The Plainedge Board of Education recently selected June 15 for a re-vote on the district's proposal for the 2004-2005 school budget. The proposed budget will remain the same as was presented to the community in May. Voting will take place at Plainedge High School from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. June 15.

The board of education will hold a public hearing on the budget June 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the board room of the Central Administration Office.

Residents are reminded that they may register to vote on any school day up until two business days before the vote (June 11) from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the administration office. Residents must only register at this time if they are not currently registered with the district or the Nassau County Board of Elections.

Absentee ballots will also be available for the June 15 budget re-vote. The submission of absentee ballot applications must be received by the district clerk seven days before the budget re-vote if the ballot is to be mailed to the voter, or the day before the re-vote, if the ballot is to be issued to the voter in person. For further information, please call the district clerk at 992-7451.

The board of education has also passed an austerity budget which includes a reduction of $1,957,999. In the event the budget proposal is defeated at the re-vote, the austerity budget will become effective on July 1.

The austerity budget that is prepared would eliminate school sports for grades 6-12; a computer teacher, the Sprint teacher and six elementary teacher positions; student clubs for grades 6 - 12; 13 support staff positions; one administrative position and adult education programs. The austerity budget will also eliminate the restoration of the late bus.
