This letter is being written by the Budget/Fitness Committee of the Massapequa School District, which is an advisory committee. Members of the committee include accountants, local business owners, business consultants, attorneys, teachers who work outside of our school district and others, all of whom are residents and taxpayers in our school district.
Over the past several years, the Budget/Finance Committee has reviewed the school district's yearly operating budgets to determine the appropriateness and efficiency to which taxpayers dollars are spent. Since school year 2000-2001 our school district has been successful in implementing a long-term financial plan. During this time our budget increases have been at or below the Long Island average and our financial ratings have improved.
Shortly, you will hear about the proposed budget for the 2004-2005 school year that will include increased expenditures. As fellow taxpayers, some of whom no longer have students in our school system, we urge you to approach the new budget with an open mind. Although no one wants to pay increased taxes, there comes a time when fiscal responsibility requires it. In comparison, our school district taxes are significantly lower than comparable districts on Long Island. In addition to the four presentations regarding the budget at the school board meetings, Superintendent of Schools Lawrence Pereira and Assistant Superintendent for Business Alan Adcock have been attending many local community organizations to discuss the proposed budget and their long term plans. Anyone who can attend one of these meetings should do so.
The Budget/Finance Committee has met with Mr. Adcock on a regular basis during this school year to gain an understanding of the financial issues impacting our school district. We have questioned and discussed the components that make up the school district budget and have given our input to the administration. The board of education at public meetings has reviewed each line of the budget in great detail. Our committee supports the proposed budget as adopted by the board of education. We also fully support their continued long-term financial plans. The quality of our neighborhood and the value of our homes depend upon the quality of our school district. The budget covers not only the educational needs of the children, but also the adult education and senior citizen programs. Therefore, whether or not you have students in the Massapequa Schools, you should take an interest in and support the proposed budget.
Our committee urges everyone to inquire about the proposed budget and to support its passage. Copies of the proposed budget will be available in each of the school buildings as well as in the district office. If you would like to speak to a Budget/Finance Committee member, an arrangement can be made by calling the business office at 797-6180.
