Nassau County Legislator Dave Mejias (D-14 LD) was recently appointed chairperson of the Legislature's Minority Affairs Committee and Economic Development and Labor Committee.
A resident of North Massapequa, Mejias' district encompasses North Massapequa, Plainedge, Levittown, Farmingdale, and parts of Seaford and Wantagh.
"As the first Latino legislator and a lifetime resident of this community, I am honored to accept these prestigious appointments," Mejias said. "I look forward to reviewing any issues or legislation that come through these key committees."
The Minority Affairs Committee is responsible for considering legislation and hearings on issues involving the development, advancement and betterment of economic, employment, business and cultural opportunities for the minority residents of Nassau County.
The Economic Development and Labor committee focuses on considering legislation on issues relating to geographical areas of greatest need of economic and community development, the effectiveness of current revitalization initiatives, such as Operation Downtown, and the allocation of resources under such initiatives. The committee also considers alternative approaches that may be more cost effective and equitable than currently existing programs.
Mejias won a seat on the Nassau County Legislature in November 2003. He is also a member of the Finance, Judiciary, and Health and Social Services Committees.
