Eric Conway, a senior at Massapequa High School, and Brian Fanning, a junior at Plainedge High School, were recently named to the Nassau County high school hockey all-star squad. The team will face off against Suffolk County in the 8th Annual Vytra Cup Jan.10 at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale.
Sponsored by Vytra Health Plans, the New York Islanders and Newsday, the Vytra Cup will benefit All Island Handicapped Sports, a non-profit organization that runs programs for physically challenged children, some of whom compete in the Special Olympics, and the New York Islanders Children's Foundation.
Conway plays forward on the Massapequa Chiefs team, coached by Tony DeMayo. His accomplishments include being selected for the Chicago Showcase.
Fanning plays left wing on the Plainedge Ice Dawgs team, coached by Steve Rupp and Tom Marksteiner.
The Vytra Cup has become a premier scouting opportunity for area college programs, and this year's game takes on added significance as a talent showcase because two local colleges, Briarcliff College in Bethpage and SUNY Farmingdale, will inaugurate hockey programs in the 2004-05 season.
The Vytra Cup game will began at 6 p.m. on Jan. 10. Tickets are $5 each and can be ordered by calling the High School Hockey League of Nassau County at 682-0594, or ordering on-line through www.longislandshockey.net, and clicking on Vytra Cup.
