A 29-year-old off-duty New York City police officer foiled the attempts of three burglars to rob her landlord's Massapequa Park home Nov. 17.
According to detectives, the officer was walking to the rear entrance of her 7th Ave. home around midnight when she surprised two masked men, one of whom was armed with a handgun.
As one of the robbers rushed her with his handgun pointed at her, she pulled her off duty weapon and fired two shots with it, one striking the burglar in the stomach. The two men then forced the officer to the ground where they were able to wrestle the gun from her and strike her in the head with it. Then they fled to a waiting car.
At 12:10 a.m., Seventh Precinct Sergeant Howard Sullivan and Officer David Veverka saw a suspicious auto in the vicinity of Sunrise Highway, just west of Park Blvd. The officers stopped the vehicle and after an investigation, arrested the three subjects in regard to the incident. The officers recovered two handguns from the vehicle, one taken from the off duty officer.
The woman was taken to Nassau University Medical Center where she was admitted in stable condition. The injured robber was taken to the same hospital where he was admitted in serious condition for the gunshot wound in his stomach.
The three Freeport men, ages 28, 47 and 23, are all being charged with Robbery 1st, Burglary 1st, Assault 2nd, Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd, and Criminal Use of a Weapon.
