Nassau County District Attorney Denis Dillon recently announced that 26-year-old Kathleen Brown of North Massapequa was convicted of Murder in the Second Degree in the Christmas 2001 killing of her newborn baby boy.

A Nassau County Court jury returned a guilt verdict May 15. The jury found that Brown, by placing her newborn infant in a plastic bag along with clothing and towels, caused his death by asphyxiation. In doing so, the jury found, she evinced "a depraved indifference to human life," and, being over 18 years of age, she "recklessly engaged in conduct which created a grave risk of serious injury or death to a person less than 11 years old."

Brown will be sentenced June 26 by Nassau County Court Judge Jerald S. Carter. She faces a maximum of 25 years to life in prison.

The case was prosecuted by Robert Biancavilla, deputy chief of the Major Offense Bureau.
