The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC), together with the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) and the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), are currently in the process of investigating the nature and extent of soil and groundwater contamination at a LIRR substation located in Massapequa. Five Plainedge High School varsity teams were recognized by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association with its Scholar/Athlete Award. To qualify for the award, a team needs a composite grade average of 90 percent or better.
