Too many white, domestic ducks and geese are abandoned by their owners. These are the cute little fuzzy ducklings and goslings that are purchased at Easter time as pets.

Domestic ducks released in preserves, canals and other waterways.

Later, when the pet owners come to realize how high maintenance these birds are, they release them. These birds are not native to North America.
The pitiful part of this is that these farm birds are bred to have small wings so as to be unable to fly away from duck farms. They are trapped in whatever location they are abandoned for life. They cannot fly away to escape from dogs that chase and maul them. They cannot fly south in the winter for needed warmth and food.
Posted signs warn residents not to feed the "wildlife" yet these animals are not wild; they are domestic and need handouts. They have to compete with natural wildlife for the limited food supply.
Last year, 22 of them were dumped at Mill Pond on Merricks Road. This year the numbers are again increasing in Mill Pond, our preserves, canals and other waterways. Many multiply only to create misery for their next generation.
These pets are unable to protect themselves. It is time for Nassau County to pass legislation stating that non-naturally wild, agriculturally intended domestic/farm ducks and geese no longer be sold as pets. Pet owners should be reminded that it is against the law to abandon a pet anywhere in New York State.
