Local voters returned Republican incumbents to their seats in Congress, the Senate and the Assembly Nov. 5. (Editor's Note: These are not final numbers, as absentee ballots had not yet been tallied at press time.)
In the 12th Assembly District, Republican incumbent Steven Labriola was returned to his seat in the Assembly. Labriola, who also ran on the Independence and Conservative party lines, received 24,998 votes, defeating Democratic challenger Stanley Bergman, who received 7,949 votes. Liberal candidate Sol Hamill received less than 1 percent of the votes.
Labriola represents the Massapequas, Plainedge, the majority of South Farmingdale, parts of Levittown, Island Trees, North Wantagh and Seaford. This election win marks Labriola's fourth term in office.
In the state Senate, Republican incumbent Charles J. Fuschillo Jr. prevailed over his Democratic challenger Kenneth Dash in the 8th District. Fuschillo, who was first elected in March of 1998, will now enter his third term in office.
The senator received 44,228 votes, defeating Dash, who received 19,723. After the recent redistricting, the 8th Senatorial District encompasses several communities (or parts of) between Baldwin and Lindenhurst, including Merrick, Bellmore, Freeport, Wantagh, Seaford, Massapequa and Farmingdale.
In the 3rd Congressional District, which includes the areas of (or portions of) Farmingdale, Plainedge, the Massapequas, Wantagh, Seaford and Levittown, Republican Incumbent Peter King prevailed with 24,565 votes. The congressman, who was first elected into the district in 1992, was challenged by Democrat Stuart Finz, a political newcomer who received 8,380 votes, and Liberal candidate Janeen DePrima, who received 1,029 votes. This election will mark King's sixth term in Congress.
