Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. is now hosting a short online Roadway Safety Survey on his web site at www.senatorfuschillo.com under the topic "Your Opinion Counts." Fuschillo said he will update the survey with new questions over the coming weeks.

"According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motor vehicle crashes and related fatalities and injuries have steadily declined over the last dozen years," said Fuschillo, member of the Senate Transportation Committee. "However, motor vehicle crashes are still the leading cause of death for drivers ages 15-20."

"Each year, the Senate has passed legislation aimed at reducing vehicular crashes and improving responsible driving practices. From licensing reform to the ban on cell phones, every effort is being made to protect the motoring public," Fuschillo said. "I invite residents to visit my web site to let me know their thoughts on several proposals regarding roadway safety currently under consideration in the Legislature."

Senator Fuschillo has teamed with his colleagues in the State Senate, and members of the Senate Veterans and Military Affairs Committee, in advising Veterans of the issuance of special recognition for qualifying Korean War veterans. South Korea's recent announcement that it is again awarding the Korean War Service Medal to eligible US veterans (or their next of kin) has inspired the New York Senate to also take action in recognizing and promoting the honor of these veterans.

Following the War in the early 1950s, South Korea made its first attempt to issue this medal to deserving American soldiers but was inhibited by the former US policy banning the acceptance of medals issued by foreign governments to our armed forces. Now that the law is changed and South Korea is offering the Service Medal a second time, the United States Air Force has been designated the lead agency to receive and distribute the medals.

"I am honored to help the Korean War veterans and their families receive this well-deserved honor; an acknowledgement of courage which is much deserved and long overdue," said Fuschillo. "It has been a long time since the cold and dark days of the Korean War. But, as we reflect upon the recent threats to our nation's security on Sept. 11, it is never too late for us to recognize the American heroes who fought in a far away land to protect the freedom of people they never met."

Eligibility for this medal requires that:

* The Veterans served within the territorial limits of Korea, the waters immediately adjacent to Korea, or in aerial flight over Korea.

* The Veteran participated in actual combat operations or in support of combat operations between the dates of June 25, 1950, and July 27, 1953.
