Roller hockey enthusiasts in Massapequa will now be able to enjoy the sport right in their own backyard, so to speak, as a new state-of-the-art roller hockey rink has recently opened in Marjorie Post Park.
According to Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto, many young residents expressed an interest in roller hockey and the need for a rink in the Town of Oyster Bay. Town officials researched the concept, visited similar rinks throughout Long Island, and recently completed the construction of an 85' by 185' poured concrete rink, with goals in place and professional netting to ensure that balls do not fly out of the enclosure. The new rink is also equipped with wallboards and team benches, and has been fully lined as per roller hockey standards.
"It's an extremely impressive rink and one of the finest in the area," said Venditto.
As with all sporting activities, safety in the roller hockey rink is the first priority. Everyone who uses the rink is required to wear a helmet, mouth guard, knee pads, elbow pads, and gloves. Also, there will be no checking allowed in the rink. The town posted a sign in front clearly stating these requirements. "Our goal is to ensure that everyone using the rink does so safely," said Venditto, "and that can only be accomplished with the proper equipment."
Everyone intending to use the rink must visit the Marjorie R. Post Community Park office to check in prior to skating. Currently, the town anticipates pick-up games and open skating to take place. As the rink becomes more popular, the parks department intends to form roller hockey leagues. An Open Skate policy is scheduled each day from noon to 2 p.m. to ensure that everyone has a chance to enjoy the rink.
The new roller hockey rink will be open year-round, weather permitting. For more information, call the Town of Oyster Bay Parks Department at 797-4120.
