Friends of Massapequa Preserve will be host at their Second Annual Earth Day Cleanup on Saturday, April 20 at 10 a.m. until approximately noon. This year, they will "paint out" the graffiti on the LIRR underpass and on the old pump house by the lake on the north side of Sunrise Highway. They will also clean up the accumulated garbage and litter along the lakeshore, the stream bank and in the woods adjacent to the commuter parking lot. Friends will be assisted by the Nassau County Police Department, Parks Department and some local elected officials. Many residents offered to help clean the Preserve when they joined Friends, so here is their chance to give something back to the environment. Nassau County is sponsoring a number of Earth Day cleanups on this date and they're hoping for a large turnout of volunteers to demonstrate how many people really care about Massapequa Preserve. Residents are invited to put on some old work clothes (long sleeves and long pants), grab a pair of gloves and come out and join. Residents are also asked to bring a bamboo or metal rake, or a long handled pointed stick if they have one. Friends will supply the paint and rollers. Park in LIRR field M-10, north of the Massapequa train station and east of Parkside Blvd. Rain date is Sunday, April 21.
