On a recent bad weather day at 8:50 a.m. under cover of rain, wind and raw cold, a group of people huddled together outside waiting for the library to open. In this crowd were several older folks, a few young children with their parents, and a young mother and her baby. At the other extreme, a similar occurrence will take place when summer arrives. If the large lobby was opened to the residents of Massapequa ten to fifteen minutes before the library opened each day this problem would be solved.
I took the liberty of addressing this issue with Library Director Bill Serynick, and his response was a very direct "no." I also pursued this request at a recent board meeting, to no avail. Chairperson of the Board of Trustees Rosemary Gensler said that the library lobby would not be opened.
The library lobby should indeed be open to people of our community and we should not be forced to tolerate harsh weather conditions.
