Sledding Their Way to Victory
The All Island Handicapped Sports team, under Director and Coach William Schwarz of Massapequa, won the Sled Hockey Gold Medal at Pennsauken, NJ, Feb. 1,2 and 3. Competing against highly skilled teams from New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland, All Island's incredible group of athletes, which includes Massapequa residents Steve Martucci, Rich Auletta, and Adam Mertz, swept onto the ice and brought home the Gold.

Schwarting School's New Kindergarten Wing Opens
Plainedge's Schwarting Elementary School unveiled its new kindergarten wing and library/media center during official ribbon cutting ceremonies Jan. 29. The next step in the construction project, made possible by the bond issue approved a year ago, is completion of the kindergarten wing at the West School, followed by the construction of a new middle school where the old Northedge Middle School now stands.

Shooting Hoops for Hope Raises $24,000
Basketball coaches and sisters Dawn Cerrone of Our Lady of Mercy Academy and Michelle O'Brien of St Dominic High School held their annual Basketball Classic at Our Lady of Mercy Academy recently. The event is dedicated to the memory of their good friend and Our Lady of Mercy graduate Lisa Cowan who died of breast cancer at the age of 28. This year the Maurer Foundation for Breast Health Education was the proud beneficiary of the event, with a portion of the funds raised going toward college scholarships at both St. Dominic and Mercy as they alternate hosting this annual event.
