Over the last five years, citizens of New York State have seen health insurance premiums almost double. This year, medical insurance premiums for public school employees will likely increase by at least 12 percent. These costs have deeply impacted all districts in New York State, including the Massapequa School District, which will see health insurance costs increase by an additional $1,173,278 next year and a projected total of approximately $9 million over the next five years.
Assistant Superintendent of Business Alan Adcock, said that he is concerned about this alarming trend in New York State. "Although all employees do contribute a percentage of the premium, this is a growing burden that the district is required to fund."
On top of health insurance costs, the premiums for general insurance have also increased in the wake of the 9/11 tragedy. "This increase translates to an additional $100,000 in payments that the district must now provide for in the 2002-2003 budget," explained Adcock.
The board of education is working closely with district administration to build a fiscally sound budget that accounts for these challenging issues, yet continues to adequately support the educational program. The Massapequa Board of Education has scheduled a number of budget discussions before the May 21 school budget vote, the first of which is scheduled for Feb. 14 at 8 p.m. in the board room, administration wing of MHS.
