The October 24 issue of Newsday listed the fourth and eighth grade math and reading scores for Nassau and Suffolk public schools. While the majority of students from the Massapequa School District exceeded state standards, it is disturbing how poorly our district fared in comparison to others. A closer look indicates that our school district now ranks near the bottom third in Nassau County; specifically, 35 out of 53 for fourth grade math, 32 out of 46 for eighth grade reading, and 24 out of 45 for eighth grade math. The current district administration should be embarrassed and ashamed of these results.
Our district was one of the first in Nassau County to request an annual budget exceeding $100 million. Each year, the administration promises results and improvements as justification for a budget increase. Each year, the budget is consistently passed, giving the administration everything it asks for. Surely, this spring's school vote will be no exception. With rankings like these, obviously the superintendent and administration are not keeping their end of the agreement. If our educational leaders cannot or will not perform, and demand scores that will restore Massapequa to a Top Ten school district, then they should step aside.
There must be immediate, drastic, pro-active academic reform if we are to protect our children's future, our community's appeal, and our property values.
