By Richard V. Guardino, Jr., Supervisor, Town of Hempstead
For many of us our pets are valued members of our families and as such we want to protect them. It is for that reason that the Town of Hempstead sponsors an annual Rabies Clinic and Pet Fair.
Rabies vaccinations are extremely important, especially now as recent reports have indicated that a person was bitten by a rabid bat last month. Rabid animals pass along rabies, not only to other animals but to people as well. Rabies is transferred through bites so it is vitally important that we help protect the health and safety of all our residents by vaccinating our pets. In Nassau County it is mandatory for dogs to be inoculated against rabies and it is strongly suggested that cats be protected as well.
For a nominal $10 fee a healthy dog or cat can be vaccinated at the Town of Hempstead Rabies Clinic. In addition to the vaccinations, there are free raffles, with prizes provided by our sponsors and a cutest pet photo contest (pets entered in the contest must be vaccinated at the clinic). Don't forget to bring a photo to enter your pet in the Cutest Pet Contest. This is also an educational opportunity for pet owners to learn about proper pet care. Town of Hempstead residents who bring their pets will enjoy hot dogs, cotton candy, popcorn, ice cream and music.
The proceeds from this event will be divided between the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter and the Animal Health Foundation. By supporting these important animal advocates you will be helping to ensure not only the health of your pet, but the health of others as well.
There is a limit of three pets per household and pregnant pets cannot be vaccinated. For the safety of all participants we ask that all cats are brought in carriers and that all dogs are leashed.
All dogs must be licensed. You must bring current license or purchase of a new license will be required. Representatives from the Town Clerk's office will be on hand to issue new licenses. The cost of a license for a non-neutered male or non-spayed female dog is $10.50. The cost of a license for a neutered male or spayed female is $2.50. Only residents of the unincorporated areas within the Town of Hempstead may obtain licenses at the Rabies Clinic and Pet Fair.
This important event is being held on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter, 3320 Beltagh Avenue, Wantagh. An appointment is required, so call 785-5220 to pre-register your pet.
Please join us for an enjoyable day that will help protect your pet and others.
