Jessica Powers and Kathryn Carpenter of Massapequa received silver medals for their performances at the Empire State Games, held July 25-29 at Utica, New York. The girls were selected to play on the Women's Scholastic Basketball Team, representing the Long Island region. The team entered the gold medal round with a 3-0 record, including a 65-46 win over Central before Central pulled out a 74-71 victory. Long Island (3-1) earned the silver, the first medal for the region in Women's Scholastic Basketball in three years.

Kellie Stuart of Massapequa was also a member of the 10 player team, but was unable to attend the games due to injury.

Powers, Carpenter and Stuart are all players on Massapequa High School's girls varsity basketball team.
