The Long Island Alzheimer's Foundation will sponsor its first bike-a-thon May 20 to raise awareness of Alzheimer's disease and support the foundation's growing list of services.

The event, "A Ride to Remember," will begin at 8:15 a.m. at Long Island University's C.W. Post Campus on Northern Blvd. in Brookville and pedal 30 miles through Nassau's scenic North Shore. Riders must pledge a minimum $75.

Cyclists can register in advance or from 7:15 to 8 a.m. at the starting gate. For registration information, call 866-789-LIAF.

The bike-a-thon is one of two new fund-raising events that the Long Island Alzheimer's Foundation is launching this spring to bring attention to its plight. Beginning June 1, three kayakers, including one whose 86-year-old mother has Alzheimer's, will paddle 260 miles around Long Island. Their journey will take about two weeks.

All proceeds will benefit the Long Island Alzheimer's Foundation, an independent, nonprofit organization whose services include the area's largest resource and referral hotline, educational conferences, a state-of-the-art social model adult day services program for Alzheimer's patients, and support groups for patients, caregivers and other family members.
