I read the recent article in the Massapequan Observer about wearing helmets when riding scooters and skateboards. I say bravo! It's about time that legislation is passed mandating that children under 14 riding scooters and skateboards wear helmets. My own kids, Andrew and Jonathan, are safety conscious and wear their helmets when engaged in those activities. I can't speak for their friends who come over to play with them. I've put my foot down and made them aware in no uncertain terms that they are not to ride the kids' scooters, skateboards and bikes without wearing helmets. I don't mind being one of those "uncool" mothers if it means preventing these kids from getting injured. My husband wears his helmet when he goes biking with the kids. The damage caused by not wearing helmets can be very costly to the child and the family. Wearing a helmet is a small price to pay for being safe. Thanks for writing the article.
