Massapequa Post 1066 of the American Legion is planning to commemorate Memorial Day in a very special way, based upon a special request initiated by Past Commander Louis D. Ulino and Commander Padraic Nugent who felt that permanent memorials honoring the deceased members of Massapequa Post, MIA's/POW's and all veterans who have made the supreme sacrifice in the service of their country, so that others might live.
Therefore, a committee has been formed to accomplish this task on or before Memorial Day of the year 2001. The Memorial Committee is proposing that three permanent memorials should be erected on the exterior of the Post building in the garden area.
One bronze plaque will be dedicated to honor the memory of the deceased members of the Post, another for the MIAs and POWs and one for all the men and women who served this country with honor and dignity.
The unveiling of these very special memorials will take place in May of 2001 at 10 a.m. at a very special ceremony on the Post grounds. All Post 1066 members, Auxiliary, Widows, Gold Star Mothers, Veterans organizations, business owners and families of our community are cordially invited to attend.
In order to make this memorial a reality, we are seeking the financial support of each and every member of this great Post, and the members of the community, to attain our goal of $30,000 to erect these permanent memorials. To accomplish this, and to recognize those who do contribute financially to these memorials, we are setting up a scheduled scale of donations as follows: A plaque with the names of all contributors will also be displayed. Categories of contribution are as follows:
Grand Benefactors - $250 and higher
Benefactors - $100 to $249
Patrons - $26 to $99
Friends - $5 to $25
Checks may be made payable to Massapequa Post 1066 and forwarded to Past Commander Louis D. Ulino, Memorial chairman, 297 North Boston Avenue, North Massapequa, New York, 11758.
Our committee earnestly hopes that you will support this worthwhile endeavor with your financial support and cooperation. Remember that, no matter how large or small your donation might be, you may be assured that it will be greatly appreciated by all of us and all those who have gone before us.
Padraic Nugent
