Harry F. Opperman, of Massapequa Park, died on Jan. 6, 2001. He was retired from the NC Correctional Center. Husband of Dolores. Father of Alice, Joseph, Belinda and Michael Dorio, Charles and Lisa Opperman. Grandfather of nine. Uncle of John and Jean Wimpenney and Frank and Frances DeSimone. Arrangements were made by the Massapequa Funeral Home. Religious service. Interment Pinelawn Memorial Park. Wilma J. Pokress, a longtime high school teacher in North Massapequa, died on Jan. 17, 2001, of complications from congestive heart failure. She was 77. She was a science teacher in Plainedge High School for over 25 years and was the publisher of the Observer Newspapers for 27 years. She was a former president of the NC Press Association and the Wantagh Chamber of Commerce and a Senior First Aid Instructor for the American Red Cross. She was one of the first teachers hired for the Plainedge High School. She received her bachelor's degree in education from Hunter College and her master's degree from Columbia University. She began her teaching career in the NYC school system before moving to North Massapequa in 1954. She is survived by her husband Jackson. She was a devoted mother and mother-in-law of Robert and Susan of Andover, MA, and David and Hope of Farmingdale. She was a devoted grandmother of Matthew, Rebecca and Sean and a great-grandmother of Elizabeth. She was a fond sister of Richard and Sylvia Cutler. She was buried at Calverton National Cemetery. The family has requested that contributions in her memory be made to the NC Firefighter's Burn Center. Carmela P. DiSalvo died on Jan. 25, 2001. Wife of George. Arrangements were made by the James Funeral Home, Massapequa. Religious service at Our Lady of Lourdes RC Church. Interment Calverton National Cemetery. William L. Milow, of Massapequa Park, died on Jan. 26, 2001. Husband of Madeline. Father of Clifford and Jeanine. Also survived by many loving family and friends. Arrangements were made by the McCourt & Trudden Funeral Home, Farmingdale. Funeral Mass at St. Rose of Lima RC Church.
