For the fourth consecutive year, this amazing and talented group of girls won the Long Island Championship with a season record of 14-1, which included outscoring their opponents 96-18.
The team is made up of "The Best of the Best" of five local high school teams, Plainedge, Massapequa, Wantagh, Island Trees and MacArthur.
From Plainedge, pitcher Jamie Geagan, catcher Janine Gasior and outfielders Kristen Twachtmann, Danielle Poulsen and Rory Mifsud. From Massapequa HS shortstop Jessy Peterson, infielders Melissa Statts, Michelle Ferrante, Shannon Alter and Victoria Forsythe. From Wantagh HS, outfielder Heather Warner and infielders Kaitlyn and Lauren Manning. From Island Trees HS, pitcher Chrissy DeMott, catcher Jaclyn Habermehl, and infielder Carol Lehmann. And last but not least, infielder Jackie Burd, from MacArthur HS who led the team in hitting, with a batting average of .479.
Season highlights include a game on July 27 in which Chrissy DeMott pitched a no-hitter with an amazing 18 strike outs, no walks, against the team from Howard Beach. Final score: 5-0.
Plainedge pitcher Jamie Geagan had an outstanding season going 8-0 with 76 strike outs, and two one-hitters.
The playoffs began last week against the Long Island Bandits from Suffolk County. Geagan DeMott combined for a 4-0 shutout only allowing two hits, no walks, and six strike outs. Round two brought the Westbury PAL team to Salisbury Park to meet up with the feared Massapequa gang. Onc again, DeMott and Geagan pitched a two hitter with one walk, and seven strike outs. Final score, 5-1. The offense was led by Jackie Burd and DeMott, who combined for five hits, and three RBIs.
Finally, on a beautiful Wednesday at Mitchel Field, the girls were up for the challenge of retaining their title for the fourth consecutive year. Geagan and DeMott were once again outstanding, only allowing two hits, five strike outs, and two walks, while the bats of Janine Gasior, Jessy Peterson and Burd led the offense going a combined 9 for 12 with seven RBIs in an 11-0 pounding of the girls from Valley Stream.
At the end of the playoffs, the Massapequa PAL outscored their opponents 20-1. Finishing with a season record of 14-1.
