On Saturday, Aug. 12, the Massapequa Fire Department will be hosting their 6th Annual Emergency Services Canoe Race Challenge. The race consists of a two mile course over the Great South Bay, from John J. Burns Park and ending in John Burns Park in Massapequa. Anyone daring enough to enter this race will receive a complimentary race day tee-shirt and tickets good for hot dogs, soda and other refreshments at the end of the race. Prior to the race a complimentary continental breakfast will be served. Canoes will be provided. All entrants must wear personal floatation devices (provided with the canoes) and follow all race guidelines.
The entrance fee is $100 per two-man canoe. Last year there were 83 entered and we raised $7,000 for Shawn Payese. This year's goal is 100 canoes! Make check payable to: MFD Canoe Race.
Recently, the plight of Christina Cowan, a Massapequa resident and third grader at East Lake School, came to the fire department's attention. She has been diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis and needs a double lung transplant. The proceeds from this year's Canoe Race Challenge will go directly to the Christina Cowan Fund in an effort to sway the tide and help her family in their time of need. Your participation in this event is crucial. Christina needs your help now! Please find it in your heart to help.
If last year's race was any indication of how much fun can be had by two people in a canoe, then you really have to experience it to see for yourself.
Bring friends and family, and enjoy a day at the races. Hot dogs, hamburgers, soda and other liquid refreshments will be served. Everything costs a buck!
Complimentary continental breakfast will be served at 8 a.m. The race starts at 9:30 a.m. and will be over approximately 1 p.m. Come and enjoy a day in the outdoors and root for your favorite two-man team to at least stay dry.
Call MaryAnn Hayden at 798-2648 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. for registration information.
