The South Shore Softball League's top two offensive teams met at Walker Field in Massapequa Park. However, mounting injuries finally took their toll on the Columbus Lodge Golden Lions as the league's top offensive team (FTW) defeated the Lions twice, 16-4 and 14-3. "Right now, we're a banged up team," said Lions' manager Ed Bochynski.

Mounting back injuries, groin injuries, and pulled hamstrings prevented five starters (Vinny Battista, Joe Pasale, Lou Roseto, Jeff Saviano and Daron Tripoli) from playing. In addition, catcher Andy Poulin played with injured heals and outfielder Glenn Rice played in his first game in three weeks, despite a tender hamstring. "We're a good ball club but we need to get healthy," said Ed Bochynski.

To add to the Lodge's problems, on the final out by first-place FTW, Golden Lions' pitcher Tony Novarro grabbed a line drive with his bare hand. Tony completed the play but injured his pitching hand and could not continue to play. Because it was the final inning of the double header, the Lions did not have to make a decision on who would pitch the next inning.

The only high note to the double header was outfielder Ron Gandolfo, who slammed his 11th and 12th homeruns of the year. The four-bagger came during the first game of the twin bill. Reserve outfielder Mark Guadagna came off the bench and provided the team with solid defense in right field. Mark will be a welcomed addition to next year's 15-man roster.

Because of a bye-week on their schedule, the Columbus Lodge will have two weeks to heal and regroup. With three weeks remaining in the regular season, the Lions are currently in third place in a ten-team division and FTW remains in first place, undefeated.

The Columbus Lodge is a not-for-profit fraternal organization and a member of the Order Sons of Italy in America. Located on Boundry Avenue in South Farmingdale, the Lodge offers its members various social and recreational activities, as well as community and charity involvement.
