Who said you can never come home again? Apparently actor extrodinaire Alec Baldwin hasn't heard.

Once again Baldwin will flex his fund raising muscles on Long Island; this time in his home town. Massapequa's own will be the star participant of YES Community Counseling Center's softball charity fund raiser to be held on Aug. 19 at John H. Burns Park. The event will help YES raise necessary funds needed to build a community center in Massapequa.

The would-be community center has been a decade-in-the-making dream for YES directors, who envision it as a gathering place for all community-based clubs and activities, including a place to continue YES's commitment to community needs.

"We've been talking about creating a community center for the last 10 years, but we worked diligently at fund raising [for building the center] for the past five years," said YES Executive Director Jamie Bogenshutz.

Snagging Baldwin away from his busy Hollywood schedule was no easy feat; it reqired perseverance and the help of Jan Holdrige, a former music and fine arts department chairperson in the Massapequa School District. According to Bogenshutz, Holdrige worked with Baldwin on previous fund raisers, and was instrumental in securing the actor. And finally, it required the movie star's commitment to his home town.

"He's still willing to give back to this community, even now that he's gone," said Bogenshutz.

With Baldwin's participation, YES is aiming to finally have the funds needed to build the center, anticipated to be 10,000 square feet. "We would love to go bigger, but we don't know if we could afford that," said Bogenshutz.

The Town is also helping YES to secure a site, somewhere inside Massapequa, she added.

Currently, all of Massapequa's clubs and organizations in Massapequa are limited to hold meetings wherever space is available, said Bogenshutz. With the new community center, all of these groups would have a common meeting place. YES could also expand its youth and senior citizen programs and availability under the new roof.

"Our vision is to establish a center within our community that can respond to the needs of all our residents, a place where social, recreational, emotional and community needs can be met," said YES Board President and attorney Peter Panaro. "A place where children, parents, senior citizens, and all groups can benefit."

Admission to the Saturday softball event will cost fans $15, and those under 12, $5. To attend both the softball game and the ensuing cookout, the cost is $50; cookout alone is $40. To play on Baldwin's team, expect to pay $500 per person; opposing players pay $300 per person. Each price includes the post-game cookout, where a DJ will spin music for dancers.

YES is also in need of event sponsors. For more information call 516-799-3203.
