Why on Earth would anybody spend the entire summer on a hot roof? To raise money for sick kids, of course.

DJ Page Mullane spinning from his rooftop location.

That's exactly what Page Mullane is doing. He was hoisted to the roof of Caffeine, a hip clothing retailer on Park Boulevard, last Saturday by a supportive Massapequa Park Fire Department. His goal: to spend 105 days on the roof, spinning summer favorites, and raising money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and for Christina Kowan, a 9-year-old Massapequa Park girl in desperate need of a double-lung transplant.

Why 105 days? It's to break his own 100-day, rooftop-living record set last year above a restaurant in Island Park.

Every bit of Mullane's life will be lived on the tar-matted roof. He sleeps inside what only can be considered a shack stuffed with a futon, desk and a makeshift sink. He has a portable toilet, and bathes with bottled water. "It's very tough, from portable toilets to showers," the 25-year-old said. "I can't escape from this. This is my whole day."

Easing the harshness of rooftop living are several modern conveniences. He has a computer with Internet access to monitor his website (www.rocktheroof.com), exercise equipment, a television and VCR, video games, plus he is supported by a team of 30 volunteers.

Mullane hopes to raise his goal of $100,000 by the time he steps off the roof, scheduled for Sept. 29. All of the proceeds will be split between the Kowan family and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Mullane learned of Kowan's plight at a DJ benefit held at the Sidekicks restaurant, just across the street from his post. Sidekicks is showing its support by sponsoring the DJ. All of his meals are ¬ literally ¬ on the house.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation has helped enormously with sponsorship, said Mullane. "They are the best by far and their name is big."

So far, the rooftop DJ has been warmly received by Massapequa Park residents, and has added some flair to Main Street life. Village officials granted Mullane permission to take to the roof, and the police and fire departments have been fully supportive, he said. Kids hang out nearby to hear his music, summertime and party favorites.

However, there are a few who don't appreciate Park Boulevard's latest fixture, citing minor traffic tie-ups and music as chief complaints. But such criticisms are few and far between. "I'm always in the public eye. Some love it, some hate it," he said.

A DJ on a roof is a curiosity for most, and passersby often wave or inquire just what the whole thing is about. "Everybody in town knows what's going on, but some still have questions," said Mullane.

People are invited to shout up their questions, and Mullane, with help from a megaphone, is more than willing to explain his purpose. A water cooler bottle, stuffed with dollar bills, is then lowered down by rope to collect donations. He also gets plenty of requests.

Raffles will also be held throughout the summer. Prizes include stuffed animals and autographed celebrity photos. On Aug. 19, comedians Bob Nelson and Billy Bingo will perform rooftop comedy, to help support Mullane and his cause.

Mullane, with his business partner and manager, Patrick Tarrantino, own Party Train DJ Entertainment, and specialize in children's parties. Mullane is also the resident DJ at the Mulcahy's bar in Wantagh.

Their web has received over 60,000 hits since late March, and advertising is guaranteed to would-be sponsors. "We need sponsors," Mullane said.

Mullane grew up in Long Beach and now resides in West Babylon. He credits his loved ones for their support. His parents "get a kick out of it," and his girlfriend, well, "she deals with it."
