Mike Strong, women's head basketball coach at the University of Scranton, has announced that Massapequa's Erin Bates, a 6-1 center/forward from Kellenberg Memorial High School, will join the Lady Royals for the upcoming 2000-2001 season.
Bates, the daughter of John and Mary Anne Bates of Hamilton Avenue in Massapequa, is a three-year starter who averaged 10 points and six rebounds a game this past year as Kellenberg Memorial went 11-12. She averaged eight points and four rebounds a game her junior year and five points and four rebounds per game her sophomore year.
"When I was making a decision on what college to attend, my main focus was to choose an institution where not only academically I could grow but, also, spiritually and athletically," says Bates. "I believe the University of Scranton is a place where I can reach my potential as a person, as well as an athlete."
"Erin will be able to help us in the post area," says Strong. "She will have the opportunity to challenge others for playing time due to the graduation of Shannon Milder and Desidre Walsh. I'm really looking forward to working with Erin."
