Recently, the Ahava Young Leaders group of Hadassah, based in Wantagh, participated in the American Cancer Society Breast Cancer Five Mile Walk-A-Thon, which was held at Jones Beach.
A team of volunteer walkers wore T-shirts listing the names of local professionals who sponsored the group. The sponsors were Moby Drugs; The Jackson Agency, Inc.; Bertin Design Group, Inc.; Ira B. Toback, M.D.; Lawrence R. Rasenzweig, D.D.S.; Manor Gate Realty; Dr. Eric Last; Daniel Rosenthal, M.D.; Dr. Attias, D.D.S.; and Drs. Peter Oppenheimer, Bob Marchitelli and Shelia Korn- pediatrics. Town Bagels from Wantagh supplied the walkers with a breakfast of bagels and coffee which provided the walkers the energy they needed for the event. Through the generosity of the sponsors, combined with the efforts of the Ahava volunteers, funds were raised for breast cancer research.
As the world's largest Jewish women's organization, with over 306,000 members, Hadassah has always been deeply committed to medical and educational programs. Hadassah directly funds medical institutions in Israel where medical research is conducted and where state of the art treatment is provided.
Additionally, Hadassah supports local educational programs here on Long Island, in which breast cancer survivors speak to high school girls, stressing the importance of early detection through self-examination. Hadassah's goals are accomplished with the assistance of local groups such as Ahava.
